Columbus Day is an American holiday commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. It was celebrated illegally in many cities and provinces from the 18th century, but it did not become a union holiday until 1937. this holiday is a way to honor Columbus’ achievements and celebrate Italian and American heritage. But throughout its history, the Day of Columbus and the man who inspired it caused controversy, and many other aspects of the holiday have been suggested since the 1970’s, including Indigenous Peoples’ Day, now celebrated in several U.S. locations. Hawaii has also changed the name of its October 12 holiday to Discovers’ Day, in honor of Polynesian sailors lined the islands. Berkeley, California, became the first city to make a change in 1992, when the city council renamed Columbus Day as Indigenous Day
